August North Chapter Field Trip

Everyone is invited to attend the North Chapter’s third field trip. Details are as follows:

When: Saturday, August 18, 2012, 1:30-3 p.m. Central Daylight Time

Where: Meet at parking lot at Cressmoor Prairie (Directions below)

Directions: From I-94, take I-65 south to Ridge Road / E.37th Ave. Drive east on E. 37th
Ave. about 2.5 miles to Lake Park Ave. Turn right (south) on Lake Park Ave. and look for the
parking lot on the right (west) side of the road, about ½ mile south of E. 37th Ave.

Leader: Paul Quinlan, Stewardship Director of Shirley Heinze Land Trust, and perhaps
others from the trust, will lead the hike.

Hike: The hike will focus on prairie plants in this 38-acre black soil prairie. It represents
one of the rarest ecosystems in the state. The majority of the landscape is in excellent
condition, despite a history of agriculture and grazing. This is an extremely high-quality
prairie with at least 10 state-listed species of plants and five threatened species of insects
that are remnant-dependent. Some of the plant species found here include Cream Wild
Indigo, Prairie Gentian, Prairie Dock, Compass Plant, Rose Gentian and Green Fringed
Orchid. The prairie is managed to reduce woody species and is maintained by fire. In the
southeast corner is a small black- and bur oak savanna.

Reply requested: You are cordially invited to join us; if you plan to do so, please contact
John J. Smith at or at 574-533-9496 by August 16, if possible. Feel free to invite others. We will hike rain or shine, unless there are severe thunderstorms.
