INPAWS Hike: Pokagon State Park & Trine State Recreation Area June 8

Saturday, June 8, 2013, 1:15 pm to 3:30 pm – Eastern Daylight Time

Pokagon State Park and Trine State Recreation Area, Steuben County, Indiana  View full hike report

Leader: Fred Wooley, Pokagon State Park Interpreter

Trail Conditions. Gently rolling to flat terrain and some fen-side walking possible. Depending on conditions and group size we may enter a fen for a closer look at certain plants, so wearing footwear you don’t mind getting a little mucky might be wise. Total distance walking is less than a mile.

What to See: Kettle-hole lake environment and surrounding fen and marsh of Lake Lonidaw and wetlands of the Pokagon State Park Potawatomi Nature Preserve. Next we’ll carpool two miles to Trine State Recreation Area, to visit another kettle-hole lake and a fen under restoration. We may stop to check on progress of WHIP grant project to restore an overgrown fen and surrounding openings. Bring binoculars, camera; your usual favorite field gear.

Directions: Located approximately 5 miles north of downtown Angola, entrance to Pokagon State Park is just off I-69. From the latter use Exit 354 and follow signs a short distance to the state park. Meet on the sun deck at the park’s Potawatomi Inn. There is a park entrance fee or you may use your annual entrance permit; both available at the main gate. The Inn has a dining room and courtyard café, open to public.

Questions? Contact Fred Wooley by email ( or phone 260-833-3506. No RSVP required. We will hike rain or shine; thunder and lightning, no.
