July 20th North Chapter Field Trip

INPAWS North Chapter Hike: Gentian Lake and Fen at Trine State Recreation Area

When: Saturday July 20 2013 11 am–1pm ET

Where: Pokagon State Park – 450 Lane 100 Lake James Angola, Indiana, 46703 and Trine State Recreation Area, Steuben Co.

Leader:  Fred Wooley – Pokagon State Park Nature Interpreter

Directions: Take I-69 exit 354, 5 miles north of Angola, IN. If coming on I-80, I-90 from northwest, take exit 144, then go south a few miles on I-69 to exit 354. Follow signs west from I-69 to Pokagon State Park. There is a park entrance fee. Meet on the sun deck at the park’s Potawatomi Inn. We will car pool to Trine State Recreation Area, just a mile from the Inn. The Inn has a dining room and courtyard café, open to the public.

Trail Conditions: Gently rolling to flat terrain. Some walking on deer trails through the fen, so you might want to wear footwear you don’t mind getting mucky. Total walking distance is less than one mile.

What to See: Trine State Recreation Area is a recently acquired property that is administered by Pokagon State Park. The official opening will likely be later this summer. Bordering the lake are high quality fen and former beach areas that are being  restored to fen. Tamarack trees thrive in the fen. There will likely be many wildflowers in bloom, including shrubby cinquefoil, dense blazing star and others.   Bring your camera and binoculars.   Osprey, Sandhill Cranes and many other bird species inhabit the area.

Questions: Contact Fred Wooley at fwooley@dnr.IN.gov or 260-833-3506. No RSVP necessary.  We will hike rain or shine unless there is thunder and lightning.
