Annual Conference November 22 "Growing Native Plants for Wildlife" When: All day Saturday, November 22, 2008 (check-in starts at 8 a.m., conference ends at 5 p.m.) Where: The Garrison at Fort Harrison State Park, 6002 N. Post Road, Indianapolis, IN 46216 Contact: For event information visit www.inpaws.org. For questions, e-mail membership@inpaws.org, or phone 317-334-1932. Two internationally renowned speakers will be featured: · Douglas W. Tallamy, professor and chairman of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, and author of Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens, will speak on the important ecological roles of plants in our landscapes, emphasizing the benefits of designing gardens with these roles in mind and the consequences of failing to do so. Gardening in this crowded world, he said, carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that mankind can no longer ignore. · Steve Yaninek, professor and chairman of the Department of Entomology at Purdue University, will focus on the annual migration of the monarch butterfly from Canada and the U.S. to the mountains of Mexico. One specific species of fir is the winter host to the millions of monarch butterflies that fly thousands of miles to spend the winter there. Yaninek will touch on the challenges of preserving the fir forests from lumber harvests and the efforts being made by all three countries to raise awareness of the habitat needs of the monarch. Also on the agenda: · Wendell Zetterberg Jr., president of the area chapter of Frogwatch USA, on elements of a healthy frog habitat. · Mike Homoya, state preservation botanist, on definitions of “native” plants and whether cultivars and hybrids qualify for inclusion. · Dean Zimmerman, Indiana Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist, on government grant programs to support the efforts of individuals in growing native plants for wildlife. · Reni Winter, owner/plant steward at Winterhaven Wildflowers & Native Plant Preserve, on the North American habitat needs of the monarch butterfly, the Certified Monarch Waystation program, and tips for growing monarch habitat plants. · Hilary Cox, garden writer/designer whose own garden is a Certified Wildlife Habitat, on designing home landscapes with fool-proof native plants. · Jim McCormac, botanist, avid birder, and author, on the role of habitat restoration in an increasingly urbanized landscape.
